Fundación Calicanto was originally formed in 1997 when members of the community joined together to save the historic Casco Antiguo and contacted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its World Heritage Centre and after a long process successfully saved the neighborhood from the threat of destruction when Casco Antiguo was officially named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

 

As Fundación Calicanto began work towards restoring the architectural heritage of the neighborhood, it became evident that the efforts were displacing members of the community just because their socio-economic status had not provided them with the skills or resources to participate in this revitalization.

 

 

As this displacement process began to take place, it was evident that there was much more to lose with the migration of these community members. As these groups started to leave, the community began to change. The charm of walking down the streets and seeing children playing, the sound of music streaming from corner shops, the indigenous artists creating crafts in the plazas - all of it was at risk. Essentially, the interaction between the people and the natural environment that UNESCO had deemed so important was slowly being lost.

It was decided that Fundación Calicanto’s mission should change to include protecting the human and architectural heritage.
